Marathon Charity Cooperation works with many Ethiopian Elite athletes:

Female athletes:

  • Misiker ("Missie") Mekonnin Demissie (running as Teyba Naser) won P.F. Chang's Rock'n'Roll Marathon in January 2010 in a course-record 2:30:39.
    Two months later, she topped that time, running 2:26:20 for second place at Los Angeles Marathon | Photo | Photo
    Her fastest half-marathon was 2009 Spirit of Columbus Half Marathon, first in 1:10:21, ahead of Belainesh Gebre and Caroline Rotich.
    She won the 2008 Manchester Road Race in 25:00, ahead of Amy Rudolph; she finished third there in 2009 in 25:29, just three seconds behind winners Alemtsehay Misganaw and Amy Rudolph.
    She finished third in 53:58 at Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in Washington DC on Sunday, April 5, 2009, ahead of Catherine Ndereba.
    Those are significant improvements over an already-excellent resume:
    She finished second behind Olympic Trials qualifier Samia Akbar at SunTrust National Half Marathon in 1:17:00, after leading early in the race (photo by Kate Renner) | She won DC’s last two St. Patrick's Day 8Ks -- 29:10 in 2007 and 28:52 in 2008 . | Her 16:39 won 2007 Susie's Cause 5K Run in Baltimore. | Her 34:10 earned her fifth at 2006 Tufts Health Plan 10K in Boston | Her 1:18:45 at 2007 Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon placed her third. She runs more than 50 races a year nationwide, always finishing among the top women. | A citizen of Bahrain but a native of Ethiopia, Naser’s birth name was Misiker Mekonnin.

  • Gurmessa Kumssa Megerssa has won countless local races. Washington Running Report ranked him #1 in the region in 2006 and 2007. He is a 28:48 10K runner
  • Dejene Nigussie Regassa | 2:11:29 marathoner
  • Samuel Woldeamanuel Gebremichael | 2:13:19 marathoner at 2006 Amsterdam, Netherlands -- 9th in a world-class field. Now visiting the USA for the first time, Gebremichael won 2008 Shamrock Marathon in March in 2:22:40

  • About Ethiopian names:
    Many Ethiopians have two last names. On their passports (and on the Green Cards if they have them), the left-hand last name is their father's name; the right-hand last name is their grandfather's name.
